It’s no secret that the Big Ten is home to some of the best and most respected basketball coaches in the nation. But all of them, from Tom Izzo to Bo Ryan, have trusted sidekicks who make them better every night. Here’s my ranking of the conference’s top hoops assistants.

1. Greg Gard, Wisconsin. He has created a nice pipeline from the talent rich Minneapolis area to Madison.

2. Dwayne Stephens, Michigan State. It’s only a matter of time before Stephens is the next addition to Tom Izzo’s coaching tree.

3. Dave Dickerson, Ohio State. The former Terp player and assistant under Gary Williams had a respectable run as Tulane head coach.

4. LaVall Jordan, Michigan. He’s a big reason for the success of the young guards in John Beilein’s system. Look how far Trey Burke took Wolverines.

5. Tim Buckley, Indiana. Former Ball State head coach does excellent job of player development for the Hoosiers.
