Big Ten women card 4 wins on final night of 'Challenge'
A night after going 1-5 in the opening night of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Big Ten women’s hoops teams went 4-2 Thursday against their ACC counterparts. Add it all up, though, and the ACC came away with the 7-5 win. No. 25 Iowa outlasted No. 22 Syracuse, 97-91, while No. 16 Purdue fell 99-78 to No. 2 Duke. IOWA 97, SYRACUSE 91 | RECAP
(AP) Melissa Dixon scored seven of her game-high 27 points in the final 1:22 as No. 25 Iowa came back to defeat 22nd-ranked and previously unbeaten Syracuse 97-91 in the Big Ten/ACC challenge Thursday night. Dixon hit all 27 points – on 7 of 11 3-pointers – after halftime as Iowa (9-1) clawed back from a 47-37 gap. Bethany Doolittle scored a career-high 25 for the Hawkeyes, Samantha Logic added 14 and Kali Peschel 10 with eight rebounds.
MICHIGAN 73, VIRGINIA 53 | RECAP
Michigan used an 18-5 run over the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 16-point halftime lead en route to a 73-53 win at Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena. Junior forward Cyesha Goree led the Michigan offense with 20 points for a new career high while also adding seven rebounds.
MINNESOTA 74, MIAMI (FL) 67 | RECAP
The University of Minnesota (8-2) women’s basketball team held off a second-half surge from Miami (5-3) to register a 74-67 victory over the Hurricanes Thursday night in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Williams Arena. Junior guard Rachel Banham led all scorers with 27 points and moved into the No. 8 spot on Minnesota’s career scoring register.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE 76, NORTHWESTERN 61 | RECAP
Northwestern took on NC State Thursday night in the seventh annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Looking for their third-straight win in the annual event, the Wildcats were unable to overcome the Wolfpack as the visitors took the 76-61 decision at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
DUKE 99, PURDUE 78 | RECAP
(AP) Duke got its toughest challenge of the season for about 30 minutes in its Big Ten/ACC Challenge game with Purdue. And then the second-ranked Blue Devils’ depth took over. Alexis Jones scored to lead Duke in a 99-78 victory over No. 16 Purdue. K.K. Houser scored 20 points to lead Purdue (5-2). April Wilson had 14 and Whitney Bays 11.
WISCONSIN 74, BOSTON COLLEGE 59 | RECAP
Tessa Cichy came off the bench to lead the Badgers to a 74-59 win over Boston College Thursday night at the Kohl Center. Cichy sparked a comeback that saw the Badgers score 32 points in the final 9:27 of play in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge game. Taylor Wurtz led all scorers with 22 points while Michala Johnson finished the night with 21 points, tying her career high.
