Two Big Ten teams will compete in the NCAA Field Hockey Championship, it was announced on Sunday night. Michigan State and Penn State earned berths to the 16-team tournament, with the Spartans opening play on Wednesday and the Nittany Lions participating on Saturday.

After winning its fourth Big Ten Tournament title and first since 2009, Michigan State earns a berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans will host Miami (Ohio) in a play-in game on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.  The winner will head to second-seeded Syracuse on Saturday. Michigan State put together a 12-9 record during the regular season en route to its ninth NCAA Championship appearance and first since 2010.

Penn State makes its fourth consecutive and 29th overall appearance in the NCAA Championship. After recording a 5-1 mark in conference play and a 13-5 overall record, the Nittany Lions earned their second consecutive Big Ten Championship. Penn State travels to Princeton in its opening round match on Saturday.

The first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship will be played on Saturday with the quarterfinals scheduled for Sunday. The semifinals will be held on Nov. 22 and the national championship will take place on Nov. 24 in Norfolk, Va.
