Live Blog: Michigan State drops Western Michigan

Jeremy Langford’s 2-yard touchdown run late in the first half broke a tie and he finished with a career-high 94 yards rushing, helping Michigan State beat Western Michigan 26-13 Friday night. The Spartans (1-0) struggled on offense, rotating ineffective quarterback Andrew Maxwell and Connor Cook, and scored two touchdowns on defense.

Jairus Jones had two interceptions, the first of which turned into a score with his lateral to Kurtis Drummond, whose 21-yard return was the game’s first score midway through the first quarter

Fourth Quarter: Michigan State 26, Western Michigan 13

Western Michigan’s run game never got out of the backfield in the fourth, as Michigan State held Western Michigan to -17 rushing yards, and Michigan State finished off Western Michigan, 26-13.

Corey Davis caught five passes for 70 yards and one touchdown in the quarter to lead Western Michigan.

Michigan State made the score 26-7 when Michigan State recovered a fumble in the endzone.

Western Michigan capped a 56-yard drive when Terrell tossed a 14-yard touchdown to Davis to make the score 26-13.

Third Quarter: Michigan State 19, Western Michigan 7 -

Michigan State’s defense shut down Western Michigan, allowing only 37 yards in the third quarter, and it now leads 19-7.

Michigan State, which has scored the last 12 points, held Western Michigan to 15 yards on the ground during the quarter.

Michigan State opened up the lead, 16-7, after marching down the field for a 9-play, 28-yard drive that ended when Kevin Muma kicked a 20-yard field goal. The drive was set up at the Broncos’ 31-yard line when Andre Sims returned a punt.

Michigan State made its lead 19-7 when Muma kicked a 30-yard field goal on the last play of a 4-play, -1-yard drive. The drive was set up at the Western Michigan 12-yard line when Jairus Jones intercepted Zach Terrell’s pass.

The Broncos have possession on their own 18-yard line to start the fourth quarter.

Jeremy Langford ran for 26 yards and one touchdown for Michigan State and Michigan State now leads 13-7.

Western Michigan tied the game at seven after Zach Terrell tossed a 14-yard touchdown to Clark Mussman to end a 4-play, 59-yard drive. The Broncos crossed midfield on Tyler Van Tubbergen’s 45-yard pass to Timmy Keith from the 41-yard line.

Langford ran for a 2-yard touchdown to break the 7-7 stalemate in favor of the Spartans. The play capped a 7-play, 69-yard scoring drive.

Western Michigan will start the second half with the ball.
