MICHIGAN 38, NORTHWESTERN 31 (OT)

Devin Gardner ran for a 1-yard touchdown in overtime and Michigan’s defense responded with a stop, giving the Wolverines a wild 38-31 win over Northwestern on Saturday. Trevor Siemian threw a 15-yard pass to Tony Jones with 3:59 left to give the Wildcats a 31-28 lead and Gardner threw an interception on the next snap.

Northwestern couldn’t pick up enough first downs to run out the clock in regulation and the Wolverines took advantage.

Gardner heaved a 53-yard pass to Roy Roundtree to set up Brendan Gibbons‘ 26-yard field goal with 2 seconds left to force OT.

The Roundtree catch is perhaps the most painful memory of the 2012 season for a Wildcat like me…but I’m going to look for a positive takeaway: Northwestern is now at the point where games that we lose can actually make a top-ten list (NU-Nebraska also made it). In the not-too-distant past, the only way a Northwestern game would make a list like this would be if we had an improbable upset.

That said, I will be perfectly happy if Northwestern makes the 2013 top-ten list three times with victories over OSU, Nebraska, and Michigan. Unlikely, you say? You bet. But the season hasn’t started yet…dream B1G or go home.
