B1G Player Rankings: No. 20, Darqueze Dennard

We’re 20 days from the 2013 football season kicking off. Indiana (Indiana State) and Minnesota (UNLV) get things started for the Big Ten on Thursday, Aug. 29 on BTN/BTN2Go. To help count down the days to kickoff, BTN.com is ranking the top 25 players. Join us as we count it down, from 25-1, every day.

No. 20: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

With all the talent the Michigan State defense has rolled out the last two seasons, Darqueze Dennard hasn’t received the love and attention his play warrants. That’s not right, as the 5-11, 188-pound cornerback has averaged 47 tackles and three interceptions the past two campaigns in helping Pat Narduzzi’s defense rank among the nation’s elite units. A veteran who improves every season, especially as a tackler, Dennard is the Big Ten’s top corner not named Bradley Roby. And that’s saying something.

View Dennard’s career stats:
2010 stats:
11 tackles; 2 TFL; 1 sack; 1 FR; 1 FF
2011 stats:
42 tackles; 1 TFL, 3 INT; 3 BU
2012 stats:
52 tackles; 3.5 TFL; 3 INT; 7 BU

I think that everyone in this building would agree that as much as we wish Denard to succeed that he will be in over his head against the four and five star recruits of Brady Hoke. I am afraid
that the MSU secondary may be whistling through the graveyard here. Come November 2, I fear that Gardner and Roundtree will light him up.

reality check? I think not. But thanks for the crocodile tears. Dennard and the Spartans will show up anyway.

Not quite everyone in the building, this old goat thinks that Mark Dantonio’s squad will once again have one of the top secondary’s in the nation. Michigan will have a hard time gaining separation against either the field or boundary sides of the field. Your Maize and Blue colored glasses are clouding your vision again this season.

Reality Check… in what building do you reside? Is it in Ann Arbor? For one, his last name is Dennard… not spelled like the QB-RB from UM last year. Second, that secondary, coupled with a pass rush, is going to be fine this season. They won’t pitch shutouts, but will keep MSU in games, most definitely.

And didn’t Roy Roundtree finish his eligibility? Yeah, yeah he did.
