Ronnie Johnson scored 16 points and A.J. Hammons 15 as Purdue downed Penn State 58-49 Tuesday night to even its Big Ten Conference record at 5-5 while keeping Penn State winless in the conference.

The Boilermakers (12-11) struggled through shooting woes, going 0 for 10 on 3-pointers and shooting 40.8 percent (20 of 49) overall. But it was considerably better than Penn State's 19-of-62 (30.6 percent) performance.

Combined, the two teams were 2 for 30 from 3-point range.

FINAL: Purdue used stingy defense to defeat Penn State 58-49 on Tuesday at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park. Purdue (12-11) held Penn State (8-14) to 31 percent shooting from the field. A.J. Hammons had a big performance for the Boilermakers, with 15 points and 12 rebounds, his second straight double-double. The Boilermakers trailed 21-12 in the first, but a 19-5 run allowed them to take a five-point lead with 16:27 in the game. Donnie Hale stuffed the statsheet for the Boilermakers with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. Purdue also got a double-digit contribution from Ronnie Johnson (16 points). D.J. Newbill scored 17 points, hauled in three rebounds, and contributed seven assists for the Nittany Lions in the game.

HALFTIME: Purdue closed the first half on a 12-4 run to cut the Penn State lead to one, 25-24, at halftime. The Nittany Lions had nine offensive rebounds in the first half and racked up seven assists on 11 baskets. Sasa Borovnjak led seven Penn State scorers with six points. Brandon Taylor added five points and five rebounds for the Nittany Lions. A.J. Hammons and Donnie Hale each scored six points to pace Purdue, which received only two points from leading scorer Terone Johnson (12.7). The Boilermakers missed all eight of their 3-point attempts but hit 53 percent (9-of-17) on two-point shots. Neither team shot well from the field, with Purdue going 36 percent and Penn State at 32 percent.
