Keith Appling made two free throws with 7.9 seconds left and finished with 15 points to help No. 18 Michigan State beat Ohio State 59-56 on Saturday night. The Buckeyes had a chance to potentially tie the game in the closing seconds, but Shannon Scott didn't come close on a running 3-point attempt.

Deshaun Thomas, who scored a career Big Ten-high 28 points, was upset Scott didn't pass him the ball. Thomas wanted a shot to send the game into overtime after he had made six 3-pointers in regulation.

The Spartans (16-3, 5-1 Big Ten) have won five straight conference games.

FINAL: No. 17 Michigan State knocked off No. 11 Ohio State on Saturday, pulling the 59-56 upset at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing. Michigan State (16-3) took the lead with 42 seconds to go on a field goal by Keith Appling and hung on for the win. Deshaun Thomas played great for Ohio State (13-4) in the loss. Thomas had 28 points, corralled seven rebounds, and went 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. Shooting 62 percent (8-of-13) from the line cost the Buckeyes in a close game. Adreian Payne sparked the Spartans, as he contributed 14 points, yanked down four rebounds, and went 5-of-6 from the field in the victory. Michigan State also got a double-digit effort from Appling (15 points).

HALFTIME: In a game of extended runs, No. 17 Michigan State holds a 30-26 halftime lead over No. 11 Ohio State at the Breslin Center. Michigan State jumped out to a 13-2 lead, only to see Ohio State score the next 15 points. Then, the Spartans scored the next six points to help it claim the halftime advantage. Adreian Payne and Keith Appling pace the Spartans with seven points, while Derrick Nix and Branden Dawson added six and five, respectively. Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas leads all scorers with 10 points.
