D.J. Newbill scored 23 points to lead Penn State to an 84-74 win over Duquesne on Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park.

FINAL: Penn State (8-4) took home the victory despite being without the services of Tim Frazier, who is averaging 16.3 points per game this season.

The Nittany Lions erased any doubts by taking control right after halftime. Penn State led 47-39 with 16:31 in the game before it widened the margin to 22 points with a 19-5 run that ended midway through the second half.

The Nittany Lions were hot from long range, hitting 8-of-20 threes for a 40 percent night from beyond the arc. Penn State went 26-of-36 from the charity stripe as a team (72 percent). Other Penn State scorers in double figures included Sasa Borovnjak (14 points) and Nick Colella (15 points).

Sean Johnson contributed 19 points for Duquesne (7-7) in the game. The Dukes struggled from the floor, shooting 38 percent (22-of-58). Duquesne shot 21-of-29 from the free throw line. The Dukes also got double-digit contributions from Derrick Colter (13 points) and Quevyn Winters (14 points).

Leading 31-26 with 1:07 left in the first half, the Nittany Lions used an 8-0 spurt to open their cushion to 13 points late in the first. Borovnjak finished the run off with a field goal, which helped Penn State lead 39-28 at halftime.

HALFTIME: D.J. Newbill has 11 points to lead Penn State to a 39-28 lead over Duquesne at the end of the first half. The Nittany Lions trailed 15-14 when they broke out for an 11-0 run to overtake the Dukes and seize a 10-point lead.

Penn State shot 6-of-13 from beyond the arc in the first half (46 percent).

The Nittany Lions have found a way to neutralize Duquesne's leading scorer, Derrick Colter. The freshman enters halftime with three points, well below his season average of 13.2. Seven Duquesne players scored in the half.

The Dukes' Quevyn Winters had a big first half, with nine points.
