Nebraska tops Nicholls, 68-59

Nebraska topped Nicholls 68-59 on Saturday at Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. Brandon Ubel sparked Nebraska (9-4), as he had 18 points in the win.

FINAL:   The Cornhuskers went 20-of-33 from the charity stripe as a team (61 percent). Nebraska also got solid contributions from Ray Gallegos (10 points) and Dylan Talley and David Rivers, who each scored 12.

Dantrell Thomas contributed 18 points for Nicholls (1-9) in a losing effort. Fred Hunter was 3-of-5 from the floor and chipped in seven points for the Colonels. Nicholls also got a double-digit game from T.J. Carpenter (11 points).

The Cornhuskers never trailed in the game. Nebraska’s largest lead was 19, which came midway through the second half. The Cornhuskers outshot the Colonels 46 percent (22-of-48) to 42 percent (22-of-53). With the loss, Nicholls extends its losing streak to seven games.

HALFTIME: There were no free points for Nicholls, as Nebraska clamped down defensively to hold the Colonels to 21 percent shooting in the first half and has a 31-17 lead going into the break.

Due to technical difficulties, the Nebraska men’s basketball game against Nicholls State is not be available to watch live on the Big Ten Digital Network.

The Cornhuskers never trailed in the first half and led by as many as 16 points.

The game was tied before Nicholls went into a funk, going the next 2:56 without scoring, and allowing Nebraska to take a 8-0 lead with 14:51 left in the first half.

The Cornhuskers made 13 of 21 two-point shots in the first half, but shot 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. Seven Nebraska players scored in the half.

Nebraska’s Brandon Ubel had a big first half, with eight points. Jeremy Smith is putting together a nice game so far for the Colonels. The junior has eight points.
