Brandon Ubel had 17 of his 21 points in the second half Sunday as Nebraska opened the season with a 66-55 win over Southern in Tim Miles' coaching debut with the Cornhuskers. Dylan Talley added 17 points and Ray Gallegos had 16 for Nebraska. Ubel also had 11 rebounds.

Derick Beltran led Southern (0-2) with 17 points, and Yondarius Johnson had 13.

Nebraska never trailed, opening up a 9-0 lead in the first five minutes en route to a 31-25 halftime lead.

FINAL: Brandon Ubel scored 21 points to lead Nebraska to a 66-55 win over Southern University on Sunday at Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. Nebraska (1-0) led from start to finish and hit 52 percent of its field goals (28-of-54).

The Cornhuskers also got double-digit contributions from Ray Gallegos, who scored 16, and Dylan Talley, who scored 17.

Derick Beltran had 17 points for Southern University (0-2) in a losing effort. The Jaguars were hot from long range, hitting 7-of-17 threes, a 41-percent clip.

Nebraska's largest lead was 16, which came midway through the second half. Nebraska was winning 16-14 in the first before it went on an 11-1 run to extend its lead to 12 points with 6:53 to go in the first half. Gallegos capped the run off with a field goal that helped the Cornhuskers lead at the half.

1ST HALF RECAP: Ray Gallegos scored 12 points to lead Nebraska to a 31-25 lead over Southern University at the end of the first half. The Cornhuskers didn't trail once in the first half and they also led by as many as 12 points.

Dylan Talley added nine points and Benny Parker six for Nebraska. The Huskers have held Southern to 32 percent shooting from the field.

Javan Mitchell leads the Jaguars, with eight points.
