Minnesota held Illinois to three total yards during the third quarter and the Golden Gophers now lead 10-3. Minnesota held the Fighting Illini to one yard on the ground during the quarter.

A nine-play, 49-yard scoring drive by the Golden Gophers snapped the 3-3 standstill, as Donnell Kirkwood turned a handoff into a three-yard touchdown. Marcus Jones' punt return set Minnesota up to start the drive. Pass plays were an afterthought for the Golden Gophers, as Minnesota threw just two passes on that drive.

The Golden Gophers' Kirkwood hit 100 yards rushing for the game in the quarter, part of his 127-yard rushing performance thus far.

Illinois will start the fourth quarter with the ball at its own 23-yard line.
