2nd quarter recap: Minnesota 34, Purdue 7

Minnesota’s offense looked sharp in the second quarter, scoring 20 points, and the Golden Gophers now lead 34-7. Minnesota executed a balanced offensive attack in the quarter, finishing with 128 yards passing and 72 yards rushing. The Golden Gophers have scored the last 34 points.

Minnesota opened up the lead, 21-7, after marching down the field for a three-play, 60-yard drive that ended when Philip Nelson threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Barker.

The Golden Gophers added to their advantage when Nelson tossed a 63-yard touchdown to Barker, the last of a two-play, 80-yard drive to give Minnesota the lead, 28-7.

The Golden Gophers made their lead 31-7 when Jordan Wettstein kicked a 40-yard field goal on the last play of a six-play, 16-yard drive. Minnesota’s punt return put the Golden Gophers at the Purdue 39-yard line to open the drive.

Minnesota expanded its lead to 34-7 thanks to a nine-play, 59-yard drive that ended when Wettstein drilled a 35-yard field goal.

The Golden Gophers’ Barker reached the 100-yard receiving mark for the game thanks to three catches for 108 yards in the quarter, and currently sits with 135 yards in all. The receiver finished the half on the sideline with an injury.

Minnesota’s Nelson topped 200 yards passing for the game in the quarter, and has plenty of time to add to his 246 total yards through the air.

Purdue will receive to start the second half.
