Northwestern gained 72 yards on the ground in the third, and the Wildcats now lead Penn State, 28-17. Northwestern held Penn State to just 24 rushing yards in the quarter. The Wildcats have erupted for 14 straight points.

Kain Colter's 10-yard touchdown run gave Northwestern the lead 21-17 after an 11-play, 72-yard drive. The Wildcats made the score 28-17 when Venric Mark returned a punt for a touchdown.

Matt McGloin's eight-yard touchdown pass to Allen Robinson marked Penn State's lone points in the quarter and capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive.

Penn State will start the fourth quarter with possession on its own 27-yard line.
