In the second quarter, Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson stood out. He threw for 68 yards and one touchdown and ran for 20 yards and one touchdown, and the Wolverines now lead 28-10. The highlight of the quarter, however, came from Raymon Taylor, who picked off a pass and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown to give Michigan a 21-0 lead.
The Boilermakers finally got on the board with 7:01 left in the second quarter, when Paul Griggs kicked a 40-yard field goal to make the score 21-3. Michigan added to its advantage when Robinson found Devin Gardner open for a 23-yard touchdown pass, the clincher of a seven-play, 74-yard drive to give the Wolverines the lead, 28-3.
Purdue closed the gap to 28-10 when Caleb TerBush and O.J. Ross combined for a four-yard touchdown to cap a 36-yard drive. The Boilermakers began the drive with good field position after Purdue recovered a fumble.
The Wolverines will start the second half with the ball.
