Matt Lehman led Penn State in the quarter. He caught a 21-yard touchdown pass, and the Nittany Lions now lead 21-0. Penn State opened up the lead, 21-0, after marching down the field for a seven-play, 72-yard drive that ended when. The Nittany Lions threw just one time during that march downfield.

Things got interesting right before the half. On 4th-and-goal right in the final seconds, Michael Mauti intercepted Nathan Scheelhaase in the end zone and returned it all the way to the Illinois 1-yard line. With one second left, Penn State attempted a field goal, but Illinois blocked Sam Ficken’s chip shot.
