In the first quarter, Stephen Houston fought back for Indiana. He ran for 68 yards and one touchdown, but the Hoosiers trail 14-10 at the end of the first quarter. Indiana scored when Mitch Ewald kicked a 46-yard field goal to clinch an eight-play, 46-yard drive, giving the Hoosiers the game's first lead.
Keith Wenning's two-yard touchdown pass to Zane Fakes put Ball State on top 7-3, capping off a five-play, 56-yard drive.
The Cardinals added to their advantage when Wenning and Willie Snead combined for a 34-yard touchdown, the last of a four-play, 45-yard drive to give Ball State the lead, 14-3. The Cardinals began the drive with good field position after Indiana failed to convert on fourth-and-1.
The Hoosiers closed the gap to 14-10 when Houston turned a handoff into a 13-yard touchdown to put a bow on a 75-yard drive. Indiana used Houston's 45-yard run to fuel the drive.
The Hoosiers will start the second quarter with possession on their own 48-yard line.
