No. 14 Ohio State gained 95 yards on the ground in the first, and the Buckeyes lead 7-3 at the end of the first quarter. Ohio State's defense held tough in the quarter, holding UCF to 39 total yards of offense. The Buckeyes took the game's first lead after Braxton Miller took a quarterback draw all the way for a 37-yard touchdown run on the last play of a seven-play, 71-yard drive.

The Knights closed the gap to 7-3 when Shawn Moffitt drilled a 28-yard field goal to put the finishing touches on a 36-yard drive. Ohio State's failure to convert on a fourth-and-1 put UCF at the Buckeyes' 47-yard line to open the drive.

Ohio State will start the second quarter with possession on its own 35-yard line.
