Arizona State got things going through the air, passing for 110 yards in the quarter, and the Sun Devils now lead 28-7. Illinois has given up the last 14 points. The Fighting Illini closed the gap to 14-7 when Donovonn Young turned a handoff into a 17-yard touchdown to put the finishing touches on a 75-yard drive.

Arizona State opened up the lead, 21-7, after Michael Eubank and Chris Coyle combined for a one-yard touchdown to end a seven-play, 84-yard drive. The key play on the Sun Devils' drive was Eubank's 37-yard pass to DJ Foster.

Arizona State expanded its lead to 28-7 thanks to a four-play, 44-yard drive that ended when Taylor Kelly found Coyle open for a three-yard touchdown pass. The Sun Devils' drive was highlighted by Kelly's 41-yard pass. Arizona State started in good field position when Carlos Mendoza intercepted Miles Osei's pass.

Coyle clinched a 100-yard receiving game with 32 yards in the quarter, part of his seven-catch, 101-yard day through two quarters for the Sun Devils.

Illinois will receive to start the second half.
