Illinois got things going through the air, passing for 80 yards in the quarter, and the Fighting Illini lead 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. Illinois got on the scoreboard first, rattling off a four-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a score when Nathan Scheelhaase found Ryan Lankford open for a 64-yard touchdown pass.

The Fighting Illini added to their advantage when Nick Immekus drilled a 41-yard field goal, capping off a four-play, seven-yard drive to give Illinois the lead, 10-0. The Fighting Illini's punt return put Illinois at the Western Michigan 31-yard line to open the drive.

The Fighting Illini have possession at their own 19-yard line to start the second quarter.
