Illinois' defense held tough in the second quarter, holding Western Michigan to 17 total yards of offense and the Fighting Illini now lead 17-0. Illinois held the Broncos to negative rushing yardage (-4 yards) in the quarter.

The Fighting Illini opened up the lead, 17-0, after marching down the field for a seven-play, 48-yard drive that ended when Nathan Scheelhaase scrambled for a four-yard touchdown run. Illinois started in good field position when Tommy Davis returned a punt. The Fighting Illini threw just one time on that possession.

Western Michigan will receive to start the second half.
