The Big Ten Conference brought home a total of 35 medals, including 15 gold medals, at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. More than 100 former and current Big Ten student-athletes and coaches participated in this year?s games, representing 32 countries in 24 different sports. Michigan led the Big Ten with 12 medals, including eight gold medals. Former volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps claimed four of those gold medals, becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 overall medals, including 18 gold. His first-place performances in London included the 100-meter butterfly, 200 individual medley, 4×100 medley relay and 4×200 freestyle relay.

ILLINOIS                                 

Robert Archibald* – Great Britain, Men?s Basketball

  • Archibald helped the Great Britain Basketball team through Group play averaging three points and five rebounds a game.

Nikkita Holder* – Canada, Women?s Track and Field

  • Holder finished sixth in the Women?s 100m Hurdle Semifinals with a time 12.93.

Gia Lewis-Smallwood* – USA, Women?s Track and Field

  • Lewis-Smallwood finished eighth in the Women Discus Throw Qualification with a distance of 61.44 meters.

Andrew Riley* – Jamaica, Men?s Track and Field

  • Riley finished fifth in his qualifying round of the Men?s 110m hurdle with a time of 13.59.

Deron Williams* – USA, Men?s Basketball

  • Williams averaged 9 points and over 4 assists per game, helping the US Men?s Basketball team win a Gold Medal.

Emily Zurrer* – Canada, Women?s Soccer

  • Zurrer was not able to compete in the Olympics due to a hamstring injury.

INDIANA

Kayla Bashore-Smedley* – USA, Women?s Field Hockey

  • Bashore-Smedley averaged 0.5 shots per game helping the US Women?s Field-Hockey team compete in group play.

Margaux Farrell* – France,  Women?s Swimming

  • Farrell?s team won a Bronze Medal in the 4x200m Freestyle with a time of 7:47.49.

Christina Loukas* – USA, Women?s Diving

  • Loukas finished 8th in the Women?s 3m Springboard.

Dorina Szekeres – Hungary, Women?s Swimming

  • Szekeres finished fourth in her qualifying heat in the 200m Backstroke with a time 2:18.16.

Nicholas Schwab – Dominican Republic, Men?s Swimming

  • Schwab finished 1st in his qualifying heat in the 200m Freestyle with a time 1:53.51 but did not qualify for the semi-finals.

Kate Fesenko* – Ukraine, Women?s Swimming

  • Fesenko did not compete in the 4x200m Freestyle relay as planned.

Derek Drouin – Canada, Men?s Track and Field

  • Drouin earned a Bronze Medal in Men?s High Jump with a height of 2.29 meters.

Orianica Velasquez – Colombia, Women?s Soccer

  • Velasquez averaged 3 shots per game as the Columbia Women?s team went 0-3 in group play.

IOWA

Kineke Alexander – St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Women?s Track and Field

  • Alexander pulled up on the backstretch with an injury and did not finish her heat in the women?s 400m.

Heather Arseth – Mauritius, Women?s Swimming

  • Arseth finished fourth in her qualifying heat in the 200m Freestyle with a time 2:07.81.

Caroline Nichols – USA, Women?s Field HockeyNichols

  • Contributed gritty defensive play and 0.5 shots per game helping the US Women?s Field Hockey team compete in group play.

Diane Nukuri-Johnson* – Burundi, Women?s Track and Field

  • Nukuri-Johnson finished 31st in the Women?s Marathon, setting a National Record with a time 2:30.13.

Roman Trussov – Kazakhstan, Men?s Swimming

  • Trussov did not compete in the 100m and 200m Breaststroke as planned.

MICHIGAN

Betsey Armstrong* – USA, Women?s Water Polo

  • Armstrong averaged 22.7 saves per game helping the US Women?s Water Polo team win a Gold Medal.

Nate Brannen* – Canada, Men?s Track and Field

  • Brannen finished 12th in the 1500m Semifinals with a time 3:39.26.

Syque Caesar – Bangladesh, Men?s Gymnastics

  • Caesar competed in the Men?s Individual Qualification round.

Tyler Clary* – USA, Men?s Swimming

  • Clary won a Gold Medal in the 200m Backstroke and finished fifth in the 200m Butterfly.  His 200m Backstroke performance set an Olympic record with a time 1:53.41.

Geena Gall* – USA, Women?s Track and Field

  • Gall finished eighth in the Women?s 800m Semifinal with a time 2:05.76.

Janine Hanson* – Canada, Women?s Rowing

  • Hanson?s team won a Silver Medal in the Women?s Eight Finals with a time 6:12.06.

Charlie Houchin* – USA, Men?s Swimming

  • Houchin?s team won a Gold Medal in the 4x200m Freestyle with a time 6:59.70.

Connor Jaeger – USA, Men?s Swimming

  • Jaeger finished sixth in the 1500m Freestyle finals with a time 14:52.99.

Sam Mikulak – USA, Men?s Gymnastics

  • Mikulak finished fifth in the Vault Final and helped Team USA finish fifth in the Men?s Team Final.

Tom Peszek* – USA, Men?s Rowing

  • Peszek?s team finished second in the Men?s Pair Final B group with a time 6:53.30.

Michael Phelps – USA, Men?s Swimming

  • Phelps won a Gold Medal in the 100m Butterfly, 200m IM, 4x100m Medley and 4x200m Freestyle.  He also won a Silver Medal in the 200m Butterfly and the 4x100m Freestyle.

Krista Phillips* – Canada, Women?s Basketball

  • Phillips helped the Canadian Women?s Basketball team reach the Quarterfinals averaging 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists per game.

Jeff Porter* – USA, Men?s Track and Field

  • Porter finished fifth in the Men?s 110m Hurdle Semifinal with a time 13.41.

Tiffany (Ofili) Porter* – Great Britain, Women?s Track and Field

  • Trowbridge finished sixth in the Women?s Double Sculls with a time of 7:10.54.

Peter Vanderkaay* – USA, Men?s Swimming

  • Vanderkaay won a Bronze Medal in the 400m Freestyle with a time 3:44.69.

Nick Willis* – New Zealand, Men?s Track and Field

  • Willis finished ninth in the Men?s 1500m Finals with a time 3:36.94.

MICHIGAN STATE

Franklin Gomez* – Puerto Rico, Wrestling

  • Gomez lost his first two matches due to a tough draw, wrestling the Gold and Bronze Medal winners.

MINNESOTA        

Lindsey Berg* – USA, Women?s Volleyball

  • Berg, US Women?s Volleyball Setter and Captain, overcame a mild ankle injury to lead the team toward a Silver Medal Finish.

Kelci Bryant – USA,Women?s Diving

  • Bryant, accompanied by partner Abigail Johnston, won a Silver Medal in Women?s Synchronized 3m Springboard.

Barbora ?potáková  – Czech Republic,  Women?s Track and Field

  • Spotakova won Gold by a landslide in the Women?s Javelin Throw with a distance 69.55 meters.

Jillian Tyler* – Canada, Women?s Swimming

  • Tyler finished seventh in her qualifying heat in the 100m Breaststroke with a time 1:07.87.

Lindsay Whalen* – USA, Women?s Basketball

  • Whalen averaged 8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists to help the US Women?s Basketball team win Gold.

NEBRASKA            

Therese Alshammar – Sweden, Women?s Swimming

  • Alshammar finished sixth in the 50m Freestyle with a time 24.61.

Chelsey Aubry* –  Canada, Women?s Basketball

  • Aubry helped the Canadian Women?s Basketball team reach the Quarterfinals averaging over 4 points and 2 rebounds per game.

Jordan Burroughs* – USA, Wrestling

  • After winning the 2011 World Wrestling Championship in Istanbul, Burroughs defends his World-Champion status, winning all four of his matches at the Olympics.

Ade Dagunduro* – Nigeria,  Men?s Basketball

  • Dagunduro helped the Nigerian Men?s Basketball team through group play scoring 6 points in the opener against Tunisia.

Gyorgyi Farkas – Hungary, Women?s Track and Field

  • Farkas finished 22nd overall representing Hungary in the Women?s Heptathlon.

Jordan Larson* – USA, Women?s Volleyball

  • As one of the team?s best scorers, servers and receivers, Larson helped the US Women?s Volleyball team win a Silver Medal.

Karina Leblanc – Canada, Women?s Soccer

  • Leblanc started one game in net, shutting out South Africa.  She helped contribute to the Canadian Women?s Soccer team?s success and a Bronze Medal finish.

Janis Leitis – Latvia, Men?s Track and Field

  • Leitis finished fifth in the Qualifying round of the Men?s 400m with a time 46.41.

Aleks Maric* – Australia, Men?s Basketball

  • Marics helped the Australian Men?s Basketball team to the Quarterfinals averaging just under 3 points and 3 rebounds per game.  His key performance was an 8 point 4 rebound game in an 82-80 win against Great Britain.

Chantae McMillan* – USA, Women?s Track and Field

  • McMillan finished 29th overall representing the US in the Women?s Heptathlon.

Carl Myerscough* – Great Britain, Men?s Track and Field

  • Myerscough finished 14th in the Qualifying round of Men?s Shot Put with adistance 18.95 meters.

Amber Neben* – USA, Women?s Cycling

  • Neben finished 7th in the Women?s Individual Time Trial as well as 36th in the Women?s Road Race.

Ineta Radevica* – Latvia, Women?s Track and Field

  • Radevica finished fourth in the Women?s Long Jump Final with a distance 6.88 meters.

Brittany Timko* – Canada, Women?s Soccer

  • Timko helped the Canadian Women?s Soccer team earn a Bronze Medal.

NORTHWESTERN 

Matt Grevers* – USA, Men?s Swimming

  • Grevers won a Gold Medal in the 100m Backstroke and the 4x100m Medley.  His performance in the 100m Backstroke set an Olympic record with a time 52.16.  He also won a Silver Medal in the 4x100m Freestyle.

Jake Herbert* – USA, Wrestling

  • Herbert qualified for the Quarterfinals but controversial referee decisions prevent him from earning a medal.

OHIO STATE

Katie Bell* – USA, Women?s Diving

  • Bell finished 16th in Women?s 10m Platform Semifinal.

Louise Bond-Williams* – Great Britain, Women?s Fencing

  • Bond-Williams finished in the round of 32 in Women?s Individual Sabre.

Samantha Cheverton* – Canada, Women?s Swimming

  • Cheverton finished fourth in the 4x200m Freestyle; sixth in the 200m Freestyle semifinals; fifth in the 4x100m Freestyle qualifying heat; and sixth in the 4x100m Medley qualifying heat.

Roger Espinoza – Honduras, Men?s Soccer

  • In a match reporters are calling Espinoza?s ?Game of a Lifetime,? the midfielder scored a goal and set up another.  Espinoza also lead the Honduras team to the Quarterfinals, where they lost a hard fought 3-2 matchup against Brazil.

Amanda Furrer – USA, Women?s Shooting

  • Furrer finished 15th in the 50m Rifle, 3 Pos.

Dorde Markovic* – Serbia, Men?s Swimming

  • Markovic finished seventh in his qualifying heat of the 400m Freestyle.

Mona Shaito – Lebanon, Women?s Fencing

  • Shaito made it to the round of 32 in the Women?s Individual Foil, losing to eventual Gold Medalist, Elisa Di Francisca.

Zain Shaito – Lebanon, Men?s Fencing

  • Shaito finished in the round of 64 in the Men?s Individual Foil.

Margot Shumway* – USA, Women?s Rowing

  • Shumway finished sixth in the Women?s Double Sculls with a time 7:10.54.

Margarita Tschomakova* – Bulgaria, Women?s Fencing

  •  Tschomakova finished in the round of 32 in Women?s Individual Sabre, losing to eventual Bronze Medalist, Olga Kharlan.

Claudia Wurzel* – Italy, Women?s Rowing

  • Wurzel finished fourth in the Women?s Pair with a time 8:06.14.

  • Anderson averaged 13.7 points per game helping the US Men?s Volleyball team qualify for the Quarterfinals.

  • Aronovich competed in the Men?s Individual Qualification round.

Dominique Blake* – Jamaica, Women?s Track and Field

  • Blake did not compete in the Women?s 4x400m relay.

Miles Chamley-Watson – USA, Men?s Fencing

  • Chamley-Watson helped his team reach the Bronze Medal Match in Men?s Team Foil.  In addition to this, he also qualified for the round of 32 in Individual Foil.

Shana Cox* – Great Britain, Women?s Track and Field

  • Cox finished seventh in the Women?s 400m Semifinals with a time 52.58.  She also helped the British 4x400m relay team finish fifth overall with a time 3:24.76.

  •  Harmotto averaged 5.75 points per game helping the US Women?s Volleyball team earn a Silver Medal.

  • Lea finished 12th overall in the Men?s Omnium.

Megan Hodge* – USA, Women?s Volleyball

  • Hodge helped the US Women?s Volleyball team to winning a Silver Medal.  Hodge had a breakout game against China, recording 18 points, all of them spikes.

Erin McLeod* – Canada, Women?s Soccer

  • McLeod played excellent in goal for the Canadian Women?s Soccer team helping them earn a Bronze Medal. McLeod was in net for five complete games of the six game competition.

Carmelina Moscato* – Canada, Women?s Soccer

  • Moscato played gritty defense and contributed two shots on goal to help the Canadian Women?s Soccer team earn a Bronze Medal.

Kirsten Nieuwendam – Suriname, Women?s Track and Field

  • Nieuwendam finished eighth in her heat in the 200m with a time 24.07.

Tommy Ramos* – Puerto Rico, Men?s Gymnastics

  • Ramos finished sixth in the Men?s Rings finals.

Doris Willette* – USA, Women?s Fencing

  • Willette helped her team reach the Team Foil Placement 5-6 match.

Ryan Whitling (volunteer assistant) – USA, Men?s Track and Field

  • Whitling finished ninth overall in Men?s Shot Put competition with a distance 20.64 meters.

PURDUE

David Boudia* – USA, Men?s Diving

  • After struggling in the qualifying rounds, Boudia came out of nowhere to become the US? first male diver to win an individual Olympic Gold since 1988.  Boudia won by an infinitesimal margin of only 1.80 points.  In addition to this, he also helped the Men?s Synchronized 10m Platform earn a Bronze Medal.

Nedzad Mulabegavic* – Croatia,  Men?s Track and Field

  • Mulabegavic finished ninth in the Men?s Shot Put Qualification round with a distance 19.86 meters.

Kara Patterson* – USA, Women?s Track and Field

  • Patterson finished 15th in the Women?s Javelin Throw Qualification round with a distance 56.23 meters.

Lauren Sesselmann* – Canada, Women?s Soccer

  • Sesselmann helped the Canadian Women?s Soccer team earn a Bronze Medal.
