ILLINI MEN TAKE DOWN AUBURN
The 16th-ranked Fighting Illini men's tennis team (19-7) advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships after edging No. 17 Auburn (18-10) in a 4-3 thriller Saturday evening at Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. Junior Bruno Abdelnour clinched the contest in a dramatic three-setter, capping off Illinois' nearly five-hour-long marathon match to give his team its 12th Sweet 16 berth in the past 14 years. The Illini will return to action at the NCAA Championships, May 18-22, on the campus of the University of Georgia, where they will face the winner of No.1 USC and Texas A&M in third-round play next Friday. OHIO STATE MEN TOP NOTRE DAME, ADVANCE TO SWEET 16
The Ohio State men?s tennis team (33-3) dealt Notre Dame (21-9) a 4-0 loss in the Second Round of the NCAA Division I Men?s Tennis Championship Sunday at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center in Columbus. The victory served as the 148th-consecutive win at home for the Buckeyes. As the fifth-seed, Ohio State improves to 31-12 overall in the NCAA tournament. With the win Sunday, the Buckeyes advanced to the Round of 16 and will meet the winner between Harvard and Florida at noon Friday in Athens, Ga. MICHIGAN WOMEN OFF TO 3RD STRAIGHT SWEET 16
The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team is headed to its third consecutive Sweet 16 after rallying to defeat No. 19 Texas A&M, 4-3, in the final match on Saturday afternoon (May 12) in the second round of the NCAA Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines lost the doubles point but took four singles matches. The Wolverines will take on No. 2-seeded Florida on Thursday (May 17) at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start. For the 12th time in 13 years the Northwestern Wildcats have advanced out of the NCAA Regional Championship round and into the round of 16 with Saturday's thrilling 4-2 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Combe Tennis Center. The 13th seed Northwestern will move on to Athens, Ga. for the round of 16 beginning Thursday, May 17. There the 'Cats will face 4th-seeded Stanford at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
