Minnesota sophomore guard Chip Armelin announced Monday that he will transfer. Armelin played in all 38 games during the 2011-12 season, contributing career highs in points (5.2 ppg), rebounds (2.1 rpg) and minutes (13.7 mpg). He leaves the program with averages of 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 69 career games.

Problem is, Armelin's contributions dwindled down the stretch, particularly while Minnesota made its unexpected run to the NIT title game in New York. In five NIT games, Armelin scored zero baskets and averaged 0.4 points in 6.6 minutes per game.

?Chip has been a valuable part of our program for the past two seasons,? Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith said in a release. ?He has done everything we have asked of him and we are grateful for his contributions to this program on and off of the court. We are sad that he has elected to leave but certainly want to wish him the very best.?
