Badgers, Wildcats & Hoosiers chalk up Big Ten wins

Cody Zeller scored 22 points and grabbed four rebounds and Christian Watford added 18 points and five boards as they teamed up to lead No. 23 Indiana to an 84-71 victory over Illinois on Thursday at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. FINAL: No. 22 Wisconsin trailed in the waning moments of Thursday's game, but took the lead for good on a free throw by Josh Gasser with 3:54 left in overtime and hung on for a 68-61 overtime triumph over Minnesota at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Both Jordan Taylor and Ryan Evans played well for Wisconsin (19-6). Taylor had 27 points, made 8-of-14 shots from the floor, and hit 5-of-9 three-pointers. Evans contributed 17 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.

The Badgers had trouble finding their touch, shooting just 35 percent (19-of-54) from the field. Wisconsin was on fire from beyond the arc during the game, shooting 39 percent (9-of-23). The Badgers went 21-of-25 from the charity stripe as a team (84 percent). Andre Hollins had 20 points, yanked down six rebounds, and went 5-of-6 from beyond the arc for Minnesota (17-8) in a losing effort. The Golden Gophers also got a double-digit game from Rodney Williams, who scored 16. Both teams had 31 rebounds in the game.

HALFTIME: Jordan Taylor scored 14 points for No. 22 Wisconsin as the Badgers lead Minnesota 32-24 at the half. The Badgers trailed 16-14 when they broke out for an 8-0 run to overtake the Golden Gophers and seize a six-point lead. Seven Minnesota players scored in the half. Wisconsin made it rain from long range, shooting 64 percent (7-of-11) from three-point land. The Badgers played team basketball in the first half, to the tune of nine assists on 11 field goals. Julian Welch is putting together a nice game so far for Minnesota. The junior has five points.

Indiana (19-6) shot 50 percent from the field (21-of-42). The Hoosiers shot 35-of-42 from the free throw line. Indiana got a spark from Zeller, who poured in 5-of-8 shooting from the field. The Hoosiers also got double-digit contributions from Jordan Hulls, who scored 15 and Victor Oladipo, who scored 18. Meyers Leonard scored 17 points, corralled three rebounds, contributed three assists, and made 7-of-10 shots from the floor for Illinois (16-8) in the game. The Fighting Illini shot 52 percent from the field (26-of-50). Illinois also got double-digit performances from Brandon Paul, who scored 13 and D.J. Richardson, who scored 19.

HALFTIME: Meyers Leonard is doing all he can, but Illinois is down 38-36 to No. 23 Indiana as the teams head to halftime. In the first 20 minutes, Leonard scored 15 points and shot 6-of-8 from the field. An aggressive offense and the ability to get to the charity stripe allowed the Hoosiers to take a halftime lead. Indiana went 16-for-16 on free throws in the first half. The Hoosiers led 13-6 when the Fighting Illini went on a 10-0 run to take a three-point lead. Indiana fired often and fired with accuracy from distance, hitting 44 percent (4-of-9) of its three-point attempts. The Hoosiers shared the ball, finishing with seven assists on nine field goals in the first half.

Seven Indiana players scored in the first half. Indiana has found a way to neutralize Illinois' leading scorer, Brandon Paul. With two points, the junior will need a strong second half to get to his usual level of production (15.1 points per game). Cody Zeller led the way for the Hoosiers in the first half, with eight points.

FINAL: Dave Sobolewski scored 23 points to lift Northwestern to an 83-64 win over Iowa on Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston. Northwestern (15-8) hit 56 percent of its field goals (27-of-48). The Wildcats shot 13-of-25 from three-point range during the game, good for 52 percent. Northwestern shot 16-of-23 from the free throw line. Other Northwestern scorers in double figures included Drew Crawford, who scored 11, Alex Marcotullio, who scored 13, Reggie Hearn, who scored 16, and John Shurna, who scored 17. Aaron White had 17 points, corralled 11 rebounds, and went 7-of-10 from the field for Iowa (13-12) in the game.

The Hawkeyes hit 51 percent of their field goals (23-of-45). Iowa was able to secure second chance opportunities, grabbing eight offensive boards. More Iowa scoring came from Roy Devyn Marble, who scored 10, Melsahn Basabe, who scored 13, and Matt Gatens, who scored 15. The Hawkeyes won the battle on the boards in the loss, as Iowa pulled down 26 to 20 for the Wildcats. Northwestern led 24-23 with 7:01 to go in the first half before it widened the margin to 11 points with a 14-4 run that ended late in the first. Shurna capped the run off with a field goal that helped the Wildcats lead 38-29 at the half.

In the first 20 minutes, White scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, and shot 4-of-5 from the field. The Wildcats moved the ball in the first half, accounting for 11 assists on 15 field goals. Iowa goes into the break with the offensive rebounding advantage, with seven to Northwestern's two. John Shurna is putting together a nice game so far for the Wildcats. The senior has 11 points.
