Best of Gus: Illinois at Indiana

We archive Gus Johnson’s greatest calls this season during the games Johnson calls for BTN, and you can watch them all here. Right now, watch Johnson’s best calls from Thursday’s Indiana-Illinois game, including some very nice shots and a celebrity (pssst! It’s Joe Buck) spotted in the crowd.

Johnson: Gus spots a familar broadcasting face in the crowd.

Johnson: In the first half Indiana’s defense held before their offense delivered and Gus called a “Rise and fire!”

Johnson: Brandon Paul makes a nifty lob pass to Meyers Leonard at the end of the first half.

Johnson: Big Zeeeee … and one.

Johnson: Richardson steps into a three … and hits.

Johnson: And he gave Leonard an elbow right to the chops.

Just watched the homering of Illinois at Illinois by the refs, and was pretty well disgusted by the homering of the announcing team. If you represent the Big Ten, how about calling the game impartially? Terrible game, both officiated and announced!

I have been very disappointed in the broadcasting by Gus Johnson and Jim Jackson. Gus and Jim talk too much to each other. When I watch a game, I want to hear about the game in progress, not about other things. When there were fouls committed, many times I didn’t know who committed the foul or how many fouls the player had. Please don’t have them broadcast a future BTN game.

Why in the world did Gus Johnson appear to be ecstatic when Leonard caught an elbow from Zeller in the 2nd half of last night’s game? I saw the shove Leonard gave Zeller in the 1st half, but that is no excuse for Johnson’s obvious exuberance over Zeller’s retaliation. Johnson was also clearly for IU and cares way too much about showing off instead of just calling the game. Enough is enough with this guy.

I agree with the other comments. Gus and JJ did an awful job.

Bad Big Ten officiating aside (yes, it’s a problem. It’s been a problem for as long as I’ve been alive) Gus Johnson is a national treasure and one of the best basketball commentators ever. Sore feelings on Illinois’ part and dumb fans who can’t tell what’s happening because the announcers don’t spell out everything little thing that most of the audience can see be damned.

Gus and Jim are awesome giving intelligence and enthusiasm – exactly what the college game is all about. IU just beat Illinois, so move on and if Myles Leonard wants to play tough, he got his and some. Get over it.
