Freshman dominates weekly hoops honors

The Big Ten Conference released its weekly Men’s Hoops Players of the Week for Dec. 26-Jan. 1 action. See the winners and find out what they did to earn the accolades in this post.

Co-Player and Freshman of the Week: Trey Burke, Michigan, G – 5-11 – Columbus, Ohio – Northland

  • Averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds, leading Michigan to a 2-0 start in conference play
  • Opened the week with 13 points, seven assists without a turnover and five boards against Penn State
  • Capped his week with a career-high 27 points on 8-for-11 shooting with three rebounds and three assists in a win over Minnesota
  • Reels in his third Freshman of the Week award and collects his first Player of the Week honor
  • Last Michigan Player of the Week: Tim Hardaway Jr. (Nov. 28, 2011)
  • Last Michigan Freshman of the Week: Trey Burke (Dec. 12, 2011)

Co-Player of the Week: Keith Appling, Michigan State, G – So. – 6-1 – Detroit, Mich. – Pershing

  • Averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds as Michigan State went 2-0 to open conference play
  • Scored a career-high 25 points with seven assists and six boards in the Spartans’ win over No. 13/15 Indiana
  • Scored 12 of his 14 points against Nebraska in the second half, also adding four assists, a rebound and a block
  • Earns his second Player of the Week award of the season and of his career
