Dienhart: Petrino's departure no surprise

It’s no surprise that Illinois offensive coordinator Paul Petrino has rejoined his brother Bobby’s staff at Arkansas. But the timing of the move seems dubious with a bowl game still to be played. Why not stay and finish the job? Even worse for Illinois: There’s a chance Illinois could lose more assistants before the Illini’s Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl vs. UCLA on Dec. 31.

The Champaign News-Gazette the news earlier this morning here.

Petrino worked for his brother at Louisville (2003-06), with the Atlanta Falcons (2007) and at Arkansas (2008-09) before landing at Illinois in 2010 under Ron Zook, who was fired after this season. The Illini offense started hot during the team’s 6-0 start this year but faded during the 0-6 finish.

Illinois quarterbacks coach Jeff Brohm will serve as offensive coordinator in the bowl game, according to the Champaign News-Gazette.

Really? The timing seems dubious, does it? He’s been fired. It’s stay and coach Illinois in a meaningless bowl game, then you’re fired. Or, he can go step in to replace Garrick McGee, who left to be HC at UAB, and…he gets to keep that job, even after the bowl game. Doesn’t seem dubious to me, or very hard to understand for that matter.

Such low class, its one thing to have an agreement to leave but especially back to Ark with his brother a job that would most likely be there for him even after the bowl. I am happy he is gone but he could of at least finished out the bowl with the players he has worked with and grown a relationship with the past 2 years. Hopefully the ILLINI can get some more coaches with a bit more class for their next hires.

At this point …Who Cares…
Its RG’s fault for allowing this to go on as long as it did…he’s gone and we all knew the domino;s would start to fall, the only thing is, do you really want to be the next coach to clean this mess up?…At least we run a clean program and have made back 2 back bowls, and it looks like Webers guys may be back on track for an E8 run or better….Better make sure they throw some bonus money @ VK or we may not have any coaches
