BTN and Big Ten men's basketball returned to the court tonight with Indiana beating Stony Brook in the first of nine Big Ten season openers. Other Friday night winners include Michigan, Purdue, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio State, and Nebraska while Michigan State fell to No. 1 North Carolina. Indiana 96, Stony Brook 66: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Indiana used its efficient offense to power past Stony Brook 96-66 on Friday at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. The Hoosiers hit 65 percent of their field goals (34-of-52). Indiana shot 88 percent from the charity stripe and made 21 free throws. Cody Zeller had a solid performance for the Hoosiers with 16 points and 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Will Sheehey was 5-of-6 from the floor and chipped in 13 points for Indiana. To go with Zeller's efforts and Sheehey's stellar play, Victor Oladipo scored 16 points and Derek Elston chipped in 11 points. Anthony Jackson contributed 14 points and shot 5-of-7 from the field for the Seawolves in the loss. In addition to Jackson's efforts, Marcus Rouse added 10 points and Dallis Joyner tallied 10 points.

At Halftime: Stony Brook has proven to be no match for Indiana as the Hoosiers leads 45-28 at the half. The lead changed hands six times. An aggressive offense and the ability to get to the charity stripe allowed Indiana to take a halftime lead. The Hoosiers attempted 16 free throws in the first 20 minutes. Will Sheehey played well in the first half for Indiana with 13 points. Anthony Jackson has been the best player on the court for the Seawolves thus far with seven points.

Michigan 59, Ferris State 33: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Stu Douglass sparked the Wolverines as he had 14 points, yanked down five rebounds, and shot 5-of-9 from the field in the win. Michigan struggled from the floor, shooting 38 percent (21-of-55). To go along with Douglass' efforts, Evan Smotrycz scored 14 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. recorded 12 points. The Bulldogs shot just 28 percent from the field (14-of-50).

At Halftime: Michigan leads 22-16 over Ferris State at the half thanks to the efforts of Stu Douglass. In the first 20 minutes, the Wolverines' Douglass scored five points. Michigan displayed crisp passing in the first half, totaling five assists on eight field goals. The Bulldogs did a good job of distributing the ball with six assists on seven field goals in the first half.

North Carolina 67, Michigan State 55: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: North Carolina went into the locker room with the momentum and came out of the second half flying as well, which allowed the Tar Heels to grab a 67-55 victory over Michigan State on Friday on the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego. The Tar Heels trailed 19-14 in the first half, but a 29-8 run allowed them to take a 16-point lead with 18:45 remaining in the game. Harrison Barnes sparked North Carolina as he scored 17 points and pulled down six rebounds in the victory. Dexter Strickland had a quality shooting game, nailing 4-of-7 shots from the field and scored 10 points. The Tar Heels hit 46 percent of their field goals (24-of-52). Aside from Barnes' performance and Strickland's stellar play, John Henson scored 12 points. Draymond Green contributed 13 points and yanked down 15 rebounds for the Spartans in a losing effort. Michigan State struggled from the floor, shooting 31 percent (22-of-72). Besides Green's production, Adreian Payne scored 10 points and Branden Dawson added 10 points. The Spartans lost despite out rebounding North Carolina 38-29. The Tar Heels went to the line 10 more times than Michigan State and made the most of their opportunities, shooting 15-of-23. The Spartans committed 25 fouls and shot 9-of-13 from the line.

At Halftime: Dexter Strickland has six points to lead North Carolina to a 36-25 lead over Michigan State at the end of the first half.The Tar Heels were able to draw fouls and get to the line with regularity. North Carolina took 15 free throws.The long-distance game has been bottled up and the Tar Heels might be better served by bringing the ball inside more as North Carolina shot 63 percent (12-of-19) on two-point shots, but 1-of-6 from beyond the arc.Foul problems could affect the second half for the Spartans. There are three Spartans in foul trouble at the moment. Keith Appling has three fouls, Alex Gauna has three fouls, and Travis Trice has three fouls.Derrick Nix has played well thus far for Michigan State with four points.

Purdue 96, N. Illinois 34: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Behind accurate shooting and targeted passing, Purdue topped Northern Illinois 96-34 on Friday at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette. The Boilermakers were effective from three-point range during the game, making 14 and shooting 50 percent. Robbie Hummel had a solid game for Purdue with 21 points, 8-of-13 shooting from the field, and 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. The Boilermakers took control of the game right after halftime. Purdue was winning 58-26 early in the second half before it went on a 38-6 run to extend its lead to 64 points with 24 seconds to go. Besides Hummel's work, Kelsey Barlow recorded 14 points, Terone Johnson contributed 12 points, and Anthony Johnson scored 12 points. Tim Toler tallied 11 points for the Huskies in a losing effort. Northern Illinois struggled from the floor, shooting 25 percent (14-of-56). The Boilermakers never trailed. Purdue's largest lead was 64, which came. Not only did the Boilermakers go to the line 21 more times than did the Huskies, they made the most of their opportunities, converting 20-of-26. Northern Illinois committed 23 fouls and shot 3-of-5 from the line.

At Halftime: Purdue has jumped out to a large 46-20 lead over Northern Illinois at the half. The Boilermakers led by as many as 29 points in the first half and never trailed. Purdue has been more effective from beyond the arc than the inside and might want to attempt more three-point shots in the second half after shooting 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range in the first half. Tim Toler and Abdel Nader have carried the Huskies, scoring 18 of the team's 20 total points. Toler has scored 11 and Nader has added seven. Robbie Hummel played well in the first half for the Boilermakers with 11 points.

Iowa 96, Chicago State 53: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Chicago State could not keep up with Iowa, as the Hawkeyes cruised to a 96-53 win on Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes were able to carry momentum into the break and sustain it into the second half. Iowa was winning 32-20 in the half before it went on a 15-4 run to extend its lead to 23 points early in the second half. Jeremy Robinson had a good game for the Cougars in defeat with 20 points and 9-of-16 shooting from the field. The Hawkeyes broke out to an early 10-point lead after a 12-2 run early in the game. Devon Archie capped the run off with a field goal to help the Hawkeyes lead 43-20 at the half. Aaron White sparked Iowa as he tallied 19 points and knocked down 6-of-11 shot attempts in the win. To go with White's efforts, Zach McCabe scored 14 points, Melsahn Basabe scored 14 points, and Eric May recorded 11 points. Along with Robinson's performance, Lee Fisher scored 11 points. The Hawkeyes never trailed. Iowa's largest lead was 45, which came with 2:17 to go. Free throws played a key role in the outcome, as the Hawkeyes not only went to the line 22 more times than Chicago State, but made the most of their opportunities, shooting 27-of-32. The Cougars committed 22 fouls and made 6-of-10 free throw attempts.

At Halftime: Iowa went on a 11-0 run to close the first half on a high note and leads Chicago State 43-20. The Hawkeyes never trailed in the first half and led by as many as 23 points. Leading 32-20, Iowa went on an 11-0 run to open up a 43-20 advantage. The Cougars have been effective inside by making 10-of-17 two-point field goals, but Chicago State has struggled on the perimeter by shooting zero percent (0-of-5) from three-point range. Aaron White played well in the first half for the Hawkeyes with 13 points. Matt Samuels has played well thus far for the Cougars with eight points.


Minnesota 70, Bucknell 58: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Minnesota captured the lead with 3:28 remaining on a free throw by Trevor Mbakwe and hung on for a 70-58 win over Bucknell on Friday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Mbakwe helped spark the Golden Gophers with 17 points and 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Minnesota shot 66 percent from the charity stripe and made 23 free throws. In addition to Mbakwe's production, Austin Hollins registered 14 points. Bryson Johnson scored 16 points for the Bison in a losing effort. Bucknell had trouble finding its shooting touch, shooting just 35 percent (16-of-46) from the field. The Bison were on fire from beyond the arc during the game, hitting seven threes and shooting 44 percent from long distance. Bucknell attempted 23 free throws and made 19. Along with Johnson's work, Cameron Ayers racked up 13 points and Mike Muscala tallied 12 points.

At Halftime: While Bryson Johnson had a strong first half, Bucknell still trail Minnesota 33-31 at the half. In the first 20 minutes, the Bison's Johnson scored 12 points, shot 4-of-7 from the field, and hit 4-of-6 three-point tries. Things could be worse for Bucknell as the Golden Gophers led by as many as seven late in the first half.  Minnesota has generated more of its offensive production from inside the three-point line by making 14-of-22 two-point field goals and hitting 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Bison have been able to make the most of their good looks from long range, hitting at a 67 percent clip (4-of-6). Ralph Sampson III has been the best player on the court for the Golden Gophers thus far with eight points.

Nebraska 65, South Dakota 48: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Louie Krogman scored 16 points, but it wasn't enough to lead South Dakota past Nebraska, as the Coyotes fell 65-48 on Friday at Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln. Caleb Walker sparked the Cornhuskers as he had 16 points and knocked down 5-of-5 shot attempts in the win. To go along with Walker's efforts, Jorge Brian Diaz scored 11 points, Dylan Talley recorded 10 points, and Brandon Richardson scored 10 points. South Dakota had trouble finding its shooting touch, shooting just 31 percent (17-of-54) from the field. Besides Krogman's production, Charlie Westbrook contributed 10 points. Leading 20-16 in the half, Nebraska used an 11-2 spurt to open its cushion to 13 points late in the first half. Talley capped the run off with a field goal that helped the Cornhuskers lead 31-19 at the hal

Halftime: Caleb Walker has nine points to lead Nebraska to a 31-19 lead over South Dakota at the end of the first half. Leading 9-8, the Cornhuskers went on a 7-0 run to open up a 16-8 advantage. Louie Krogman has played well thus far for the Coyotes with six points.

Illinois 67, Loyola (IL) 49: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Meyers Leonard scored 15 points and Brandon Paul added 14 as they teamed up to lead Illinois to a 67-49 victory over Loyola (IL) on Friday at Assembly Hall in Champaign, Ill. Leonard also shot 7-10 from the field in the victory. Tyler Griffey also chipped in 10 points. Walt Gibler was a bright spot for the Ramblers in the loss. He scored 19 points on 7-11 shooting and was a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line. Illinois out rebounded Loyola 31-24 in the victory. The Fighting Illini attempted only nine free throws in the game, going 5-9 from the line.

Ohio State 73, Wright State 42: Box Score | AP Recap

Final Recap: Jared Sullinger led the Buckeyes with 19 points as Ohio State cruised to a 73-42 victory of Wright State. Sullinger went 4-8 from the field and 10-12 from the line.  William Buford threw in another 13 points with four assists, and Aaron Craft was good for another 10 on 7-8 free throw shooting. A.J. Pacher led Wright State with 13 points. Ohio State grabbed a big advantage in the boards, outpacing Raiders 31-20 on the glass.  They also had more chances from the charity stripe, shooting 40 free throws to Wright State's 15.

At Halftime: Jared Sullinger scored 13 points for Ohio State in the first half to carry it to a 34-20 lead over Wright State. The Buckeyes have the lead at halftime due in large part to their ability to get to the free throw line. Through 20 minutes of play, Ohio State has attempted 23 free throws. The Buckeyes didn't trail once in the first half and they also led by as many as 15 points. Leading 24-17, Ohio State went on an 8-0 run to open up a 32-17 advantage. The Buckeyes showed their ability to pass the ball well with six assists on eight field goals. The Raiders fired often and fired with accuracy from distance, hitting 57 percent (4-of-7) of their three-point attempts. A.J. Pacher has played well thus far for Wright State with nine points.
