First let me say that Mr Hart and Mr. Rackley did a wonderful job as commentators on the Michigan vs. Eastern Michigan football game. However, I take exception to the comment by one of them (Mr. Hart I believe) that Michigan never made use of their QB’s as passers and that is why Tom Brady was a 6th round pick. Michigan QB’s primarily handed off to running backs was the implication. He stated that NFL people were not aware of the talent of Tom Brady for that reason.
This may have been true in the early days of Bo Schembechler’s teams but not in the later years and definitely not under Coach Moeller or Coach Carr. In fact, Michigan became known as “Quarterback U” starting with Jim Harbaugh when Michigan had Harbaugh, Elvis Gerbach, Todd Collins, Brian Griese as well as Tom Brady and Chad Henne and others in the NFL. Check out your facts–Michigan QB’s are well trained and have done well for many years as pro style quarterbacks. Also, check out your facts on Tom Brady. If you look at the Michigan career records and the Big Ten records for QB’s, Tom Brady is one of the leaders. He brought Michigan to victory in many a game as a passing QB, not just a hand off man. Many victories were come from behind, dramatic finishes and many were blowouts. He was one of the best and did whatever was needed. The NFL was skeptical about him only because he was not a “high profile” QB with astronomical numbers, not because his career stats were unknown to them.
Your Big Ten Network has chosen to choose Tom Brady as one of the “Big Ten Icons”. That should tell you something. This is a “college football” honor not an “NFL” honor. A “hand off” QB would not have received such acclaim. Looking at his college career passing stats will certainly refute your claim about his value as a passing quarterback. He was one of the greatest at Michigan and in the Big Ten as an all-around quarterback.
